ラジオ英会話 「I need to finish this report by 11:00」2019年4月3日 Lesson3

～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・ 今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson3：「英語表現は日本語訳では語れない③ ~ by と until 」

 A) Hi, Riko. You seem to be very busy today.
 B) Yes, I am. I need to finish this report by 11:00.
 A) I’m really sorry to bother you, but I have to tell you something.
 B) Go ahead.
 A) We must all complete the online survey about internet security by 6 p.m. today.
 B) What survey?
 A) It was announced on the company’s online notice board a month ago.
 B) I’ve been too busy to look at that recently.
 A) I know. It’s hard to keep up with all the announcements.

① I’m really sorry to bother you, but I have to tell you something.
　邪魔をして本当に申し訳ないんだけれど、君に伝えておかなければならないことがあるんだ
② I’ve been too busy to look at that recently.
　私はずっと忙しくて最近それを見ていませんでした。

＊①の " bother " は trouble（困り事、面倒）が思い起こされる単語。②の " too " は「できない」が強く響く単語。そして、何ができないのかを to以下で示している。 

 （例文）
Can you reach the top shelf? – I’m too short.
いちばん上の棚に手が届く？　私は背が低すぎるわ。

この報告書を11時までに仕上げる必要があります。

＊" by " は「期限」を表す。by は「出来事がその期限の近くで起こる感じがする」ことから期限に使われる。一方、" unti, till " は「ある状態がその時点まで続くこと」を意味する。" till " は " until " に比べて軽い表現。

 （例文）
・I’ll wait for you until (till) 7:00.
　7時まで（ずっと）君を待つよ。
・" I’ll be there by 7:00 " は「7時までに行く」。
　" I’ll be there until 7:00 " は「7時までずっといる」。

- Express yourself in English -
1) 私は週末までに全部終わらせることができるよ。
2) その試合はあまりにもつまらなかったので、多くの人は最後まで会場に残らなかった。

（答え）
1) I can finish everything by the end of the week.
2) The match was so boring that many people didn’t stay until the end.
