～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson2：「英語表現は日本語訳では語れない② ~ between と among 」

A) Yuta, where is your friend Kayley?
B) Well, I told her to meet me at Kichijoji Station, but I got a message from her saying that she is already in the park.
A) It’s tough to find someone among all these people.
B) Yes, the cherry blossoms of Inokashira Park are famous, and many people come here every spring to view them.
A) Wait. I’ve only met Kayley once, but isn’t she the girl eating an ice cream over there?
B) Oh, I think you’re right.
A) Let’s go over to her.

① I told her to meet me at Kichijoji Station.
　彼女には吉祥寺駅で僕と会うように、と言ったんだ。
② Isn’t she the girl eating an ice cream over there?
　あそこでアイスクリームを食べている女の子は、彼女じゃないの？

＊①の " to " のイメージは矢印。" told her to meet " は「彼女がto以下の方向に動くように指示した」ということ。" to " は「押す」タイプの動詞" order, force, ask " に好んで使われる。②の文は典型的な説明型の文。

こんなにたくさんの人たちの中で誰かを見つけるなんて大変だわ。

＊" among " のイメージは「雑多な集合体（ごちゃごちゃ）」。「1つ1つがハッキリと見えてこない」というポイントがある。" in " とは全然違う。" in " だと人々の体の中にいる感じになる。また、" between " も全然イメージが違う。これは「1つ1つがハッキリと見えている」単語。

・There’s an orangutan between the two trees.
　オランウータンが2本の木の間にいるよ。
・There’s an orangutan among the trees.
　オランウータンが木の間にいるよ。

1) 彼女は、学生の間でたいへん人気がある。
2) 私の娘は、ハーバードとスタンフォードとコロンビア（大学）の中からまだ選んでいます。

1) She’s very popular among the students.
2) My daughter is still choosing between Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia.

2）" between " は「2者間」が典型的だがが、ハッキリしているものの間なら3者以上にも使える
