～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson4：「英語表現は日本語訳では語れない④ ~ during と for 」

A) Hi, Naho. Long time, no see. What did you do over the spring break?
B) I had a part-time job during the holidays.
A) Oh, really? What kind of job?
B) My friends run a video production company. They make music videos for several indie bands.
A) That sounds like fun. What did you do?
B) I just helped make the costumes. But they didn’t pay me much.
A) That’s too bad.

＊" indie " = 自主制作系の

- Check your grammar -
① My friends run a video production company.
　何人かの友達が、ビデオ制作会社を運営しているの
② They didn’t pay me much.
　給料はあまりよくなかったわ。

＊①の " run " は他動型。動詞の働きかけが対象に及ぶ。②の " pay me much " は授与型。

（例文）
・She wrote me a letter.
　彼女は私に手紙を書いてくれた。
・Mr. Green taught us French.
　グリーン先生は私たちにフランス語を教えてくれた。

休みの間アルバイトをしていたのよ。

＊" during " は「ある状況がいつ起こったのか」を表す。一方、" for " は「長さ」に焦点があり、「どれくらいの長さある状況が続いたか」を表す。

・We have been partners for five years.
　僕たちは5年間パートナーです。
・I backpacked around South America during the summer.
　夏の間中、南米のあちこちをバックパック旅行した。
・l backpacked around South America for three weeks.
　3週間、南米のあちこちをバックパック旅行した。

1) オーストラリアでのホームスティの間、たくさんのすばらしい経験をしました。
2) 私は2週間入院していました。

（答え）
1) I had so many amazing experiences during my homestay in Australia.
2) I was in the hospital for two weeks.

（解説）
1）" experiences " = 個々の具体的な経験が想起されているから、可算扱い
