Lesson209：「if節を伴わない仮定法①」

 A) Hi, Kara. Can I ask you something?
 B) Sure, if it’s not too personal. What’s up?
 A) I’m having some trouble with my roommate.
 B) What happened?
 A) He says he can’t pay his rent for this month, so he’s asking me to pay the entire rent. I don’t know what to do. In my place, what would you do?
 B) That’s a tough one. I’ve never had a roommate who didn’t pay the rent. Mmm… Maybe you can pay the rent this month, and make sure he pays you back next month.
 A) That’s a good idea. I think I’ll try that.

＊" what they say " = 世間一般で言われること
＊" Time heals all wounds " = 何事も時間が解決してくれる

In my place, what would you do?
私の立場なら、どうしますか？

＊仮定法は、常に if を伴うわけではない。「反事実のニュアンスが含まれる表現」が含まれる場合は、if は使われない。「In my place」に反事実の含みがある。

（例文）
・In your shoes, I wouldn’t accept their offer.
　君の立場なら、彼らの申し出は受け入れないだろうな。
・Something strange is happening. Otherwise, he would not act like this.
　何か妙なことが起こっている。そうでなければ、彼がこんなふうに振舞うわけがない。
・Fifty years ago, nobody could have imagined such advances in technology.
　50年前なら、誰もこのような技術的進歩を想像することは、できなかっただろう。
