Lesson211：「if節を伴わない仮定法②」

 A) So many people are here today. You look funny in a graduation cap and gown.
 B) Thanks. You look funny, too. Look at this program. It says " Commencement Exercises," not " Graduation Ceremony."
 A) Yes, it’s a more formal way of saying the same thing.
 B) Why is it called "commencemet"?
 A) "Commencement" means starting something. So, our graduation is the start of our adult lives, not just the end of our college days.
 B) Yes, I’m looking forward to starting my career in the real world. And I really have to thank my parents. Without their support, I couldn’t have graduated.

Without their support, I couldn’t have graduated.
彼ら（両親）の支援がなかったら、卒業できなかっただろう。

＊ if節が使われない仮定法の文。" Without their support " が反事実を表している。他に「but for」がある。
（例文）
・But for your encouragement, I would have given up a long time ago
　君の励ましがなかったら、ずいぶん前にあきらめただろう。

（答え）
1) Without crowdfunding, I could never have started my business.

（解説）
1）" If it had not been for crowdfunding, " でもOK。" crowdfunding "  means lots of people get together and give a little bit of money, and gradually build up into the amount that you need.
