Dialog4 「A Little Help from a Friend」

 A) I overheard that you’re having car trouble.
 B) Yeah. My car won’t start.
 A) That’s a drag. Where do you live?
 B) On Wilshire.
 A) I’ll pick you up tomorrow.
 B) Really?
 A) It’s on my way. I drive down Wilshire every morning.
 B) Great!
 A) Thanks for sticking up for me in front of Bud. It meant a lot.
 B) Well, what are friends for?

- Words & Expressions -
・a little help from -　 〜の助けを少し借りて
・l overheard（that）- 私はいうことを小耳に挟みましたが・ちらりと聞きましたが。
・have car trouble 　車の調子が悪い
・That’s a drag. 　面倒くさいね。
・on Wilshire 　ウィルシャー通り沿いに
・pick 人 up　 迎えに行く
・on one’s way 　途中で
・drive down – 　 ～通りを車で通る
・stick up for -　 〜をかばう・守る・支持する
・X means a lot to Y　XはYにとって、大事な意味を持つ
・What are friends for? 　友だちだから（当然ですよ）

- Apply It -
Well, what are friends for?
だって、友達だから当然ですよ。

＊気持ちを伝える表現。修辞疑問文と呼ばれる。

A) I turned in the report this morning.
B) Great.
A) Thanks for helping me write it.
B) Well, what are friends for?

- Say It -
I overheard that you’re having car trouble.

＊指示代名詞の" that " は、内容語だから強める。接続詞の"that " は弱める。" you’re " も弱める。

- Write It -
エイミーの車がどうやっても動きません。ジェイコブは明日彼女を車で迎えに行くと申し出ます。また、彼女がバドの前で彼をかばってくれたことに感謝します。

Amy’s car won’t start. Jacob offers to pick her up tomorrow. And he thanks her for sticking up for him in front of Bud.
（解説）
・" Also " でもいいが、後に続く文を強めてしまう。だから、and の方が好ましい。
