・ " 仮定法 "と " If " は、ネイティブの心理への理解が重要。仮定法は、可能性が著しく低いという話し手の心理を表す特別な時表現。

Lesson208：「過去の仮定：現在の帰結」

 A) What happened with you and Daisy yesterday? She was upset with you after the club meeting.
 B) Oh, I don’t know. I guess she thinks I don’t take my club responsibilities seriously enough.
 A) Don’t you?
 B) I think I do, but she has a different opinion.
 A) Did you talk to her after that?
 B) No, I sent her an angry email message. I wish I had been kinder to her. Now she isn’t talking to me.
 A) Well, I’m sure everything will be all right. You know what they say. Time heals all wounds.
 B) I hope so.

＊" what they say " = 世間一般で言われること
＊" Time heals all wounds " = 何事も時間が解決してくれる

- Real grammar for communication -
I wish I had been kinder to her.
彼女にもっと親切にしていたらなぁ。

＊" with " は「（～であればいいのにと）願う」という動詞。この動詞に後続する節は、常に（反事実の）仮定法。そして、" want "  は生々しい欲求であるのに対し、" wish " は、ドリーミーで、現実から遠く離れたニュアンスがる。また、want のフォーマル版として使われることもある。

・I wish I were richer.
　もっとお金持ちだったらなぁ。
・I wish you luck.
　幸運を祈ります。
・I wish you a Merry Christmas. .
　クリスマスおめでとう。
・If you wish to see the school principal, please make an appointment.
　校長への面会をお望みなら、事前のお約束をお願いいたします。

1) 日本語を話すのがもっとうまかったらなぁ。
2) もっと暖かい服を何枚か持ってきたらよかったなぁ。
（答え）
1) I wish I spoke Japanese more fluently.
2) I wish I had brought some warmer clothes.
（解説）
1）" I want to speak Japanese more fluently" =  Then probably you decided to take a language course or something you’re really making an effort to reach that goal. But if you said, " I wish I spoke Japanese more fluently." , probably you’re doing nothing. Just remains, you know,
