Lesson171：「wh疑問文③ 主語を尋ねる」
- Key Sentence -
・Who told you that?
・What makes you happy?（ 何をしているときが幸せなの？）
・What really gets on your nerves?（イライラさせる）
・What has happened to Joe? He’s in an awful mood.
＊＊この wh疑問文は、疑問形を伴っていない。それは、「主語を尋ねているから。wh語を主語とみなし、普通の文を作るだけ。wh語は、単数形として扱う。
- GRAMMAR IN ACTION -
1）誰がこの割れた窓の弁償をするの？
2）彼がそれほど突然、心変わりした原因は何だろう？
1）Who is going to pay for this broken window?
2）What caused him to change his mind so suddenly?
＊" will " でなく " is going to " が使われてるのは、もうすでに出来事(ガラスが割れる）が起こり、弁償を必然的にしないといけないから。
Lesson172：「wh疑問文④ 大きな wh語」
- Key Sentence -
・What kind of music do you like?
・Whose racket is this?
・Who out of the six candidates should we choose?
＊「大きな wh語」容易にも作れる。大きな wh語は自由に自作しても構わん。。

1）シェークスピアの作品の中でどれがいちばん好きですか？
2）学校の劇であなたは何の役をするの？
1）Which work of Shakespeare do you like the most?
2）What role do you have in the school play?
＊" what role " と " which role " では、ニュアンスが違う。
・" what role " = 漠然とした言い方。具体的な役が浮かんでるわけではない。
・" which role " = いくつかの特定の役があり、その中から一つを選ぶ感じ。
Lesson173：「wh疑問文⑤ 複雑な wh疑問文(1)」
- Key Sentence -
・What do you think was the cause?
＊この文の空所は、think の内容を説明する節の主語の位置にある。was の前には何もない。ここが疑問のターゲット。「 何が原因だと思う」となる。think の後ろには、that は使えない。

1）誰が今夜の試合で勝つと思いますか？
2）誰が私たちの新規事業の設立を助けてくれると思う？
1）Who do you guess will win the big fight tonight?
2）Who do you suggest can help us establish our startup?
＊ guess = 推測する。think ほどしっかりとした思考過程のない軽い動詞
Lesson174：「wh疑問文⑥ 複雑な wh疑問文(2)」
- Key Sentence -
・ What time do you want me to come?
・Where do you want to go for your honeymoon?
・Who would you like to be as famous as？
＊複雑なwh疑問文を理解し造るためには、空所を意識することが大切。ここでは、come の後ろが空所になっている。

1）いつ始めたい？
2）誰と同じくらいカリスマ性を持ちたいですか？
1）When do you want to start?
2）Who would you like to be as charismatic as?
＊begin = ある時点から始まる , start = 始まり、目標までのプロセスが創造される。あんまり違いはない。
Lesson176：「wh疑問文⑦ 複雑な wh疑問文(3)」
- Key Sentence -
・Who did you say Cindy called?
・Who did you say called Cindy?
・Who did you say Becky met at the supermarket?
＊複雑な wh疑問文の仕上げ。「called の後ろ」が欠けている。

1）君は、ピートがどの女の子を好きだって言ったの？
2）君は、どの女の子がピートを好きだと言ったの？
3）僕がどのダンスパートナーを気に入っていたと、みんなは思っていたの？
1）Which girl did you say Pete liked?
2）Which girl did you say liked Pete?
3）Which dance partner did everyone think I fancied？
＊fancy = 気に入る、欲しい（イギリス英語）。アメリカでは、ほぼ使われん。
Lesson177：「wh疑問文⑧ 複雑な wh語を使って、聞き返す」
- Key Sentence -
・ I bought a loofah. – You bought a what?
・I went for a drink with Kenshiro. - You went for a drink with who?
（聞き返し）
・Pardon? / Sorry? / Excuse me?
・I beg your pardon?
・Would you mind repeating what you said?
＊wh語を使って聞き返すテクニック。聞き取れなかった箇所に、wh語を置いて聞き返すのがポイント。二箇所以上、聞き返すこともできる。" Pardon? " は全文を聞き返すが、これらはピンポイントで聞き返せる。

1）僕の姉はこの9月にラダクにトレッキングツアーに行くんだよ。一どこのトレッキングツアーだって？
2）僕の父親は飛行恐怖症を患っているんだよ。君のお父さんは何を患っているの？
1）My older sister is going on a trekking tour in Ladakh this September. – A trekking tour where?
2）My dad suffers from aviophobia. - Your dad suffers from what?
＊trekking = 長く、厳しい道を行く表現。また、重装備のイメージがある。hiking = すごく気楽な表現
＊suffer from = ～を患う 。- phobia = ~ 恐怖症
Lesson178：「疑問の意図のない wh疑問文①」
- Key Sentence -
・Why don’t we go out for a drink tonight？
・Another drink？ – why not？
・why must you always contradict me?
・You need to apologize to her. – Why should I?
＊" Why don't you ~ " = 相手に勧める文。
＊why not？ = 同意。 Why should I? = やなこった

1）彼女に電話してどうなるか見てみれば？
2）どうして電話して遅れるって言ってくれなかったの？
1）Why don’t you give her a call and see what happens?
2）Why didn’t you call me to tell me you’d be late?

Lesson179：「疑問の意図のない wh疑問文②」
- Key Sentence -
・Who do you think you are?（何様？）
・Who are you to talk to me like that?
・Who knows what will happen in the future?（誰も分からん）
・What do you say we just order some Chinese takeout for dinner tonight?
・What are you waiting for?（催促）
・How about going for a bike ride?（提案）
＊" What do you say " = ～するだけでいい

1）私の子どもをどう育てるか指図するなんて、何様なの？
2）僕らのボスは本当に気まぐれだよ。誰も彼が次に何をするつもりならない！
3）彼女は幸せよ、でも私はどうなの？
1）Who are you to be telling me how to raise my kids?
2）Our boss is so unpredictable. Who knows what he’s going to do next!

「no more than（～を超えない）」
A）you’re going to Carl’s Christmas party in Ebisu, aren’t you?
B）Yes. We’re supposed to bring a gift that costs no more than 1,000 yen.
「The night is still young（時間がたっぷりある事を示唆）」
A）Anyway, I’m sorry, but I have to be going now.
B）The night is still young. Why don’t you stay longer?
A）I have to work tomorrow.
B）But it’s Christmas Day!
A）Yes, but in Japan, Christmas Day is not a holiday.
