Lesson36「 before と in front of ：「〜の前」をマスター」

 A) I’m really worried about next Friday’s math test.
 B) Why? We’ve covered all the content in class.
 A) Yes, but there’s lots I don’t understand. It seems to go in one ear and out the other!
 B) OK. Don’t worry. Meet me in front of the library at 4 o’clock. We can go over everything together, and I’ll explain anything you have a problem with.
 A) Thanks a million, Krista. You’re a star!
 B) Yeah, I know. And you owe me one!

＊" go in one ear and out the other " = 聞いてすぐ忘れる
＊" Thanks a million " = 誇張表現

① There’s lots I don’t understand.
　僕には理解できないことがたくさんあります
② I’ll explain anything you have a problem with.
　あなたが困っていることがあったら何でも私が説明してあげるわ。

＊②の " with " を忘れない 。

Meet me in front of the library at 4 o’clock.
　4時に図書館の前で会いましょう。

＊ここの " in front of " のイメージは「場所的な前」。" behind " の逆。
＊" before " は「順序関係」を示す。しかし、「すごく大きな感情の高揚」があるときは、「場所的な前」も使う。

 （例文）
・Don’t stand in front of me. I can’t see the screen.
　私の前に立たないで。スクリーンが見えないから。
・Shibuya comes before Ebisu.
　渋谷は恵比寿の手前です。
・I put my family before my job.
　私は仕事よりも家族優先です。
・People are dying before our very eyes.
　人々がまさに私たちの目の前で死んでいるんだよ。

1) 彼女を映画館の前で待っていたが、彼女は現れなかった！
2) あなたは、閉まる前に急いで銀行に着く必要があります。

（答え）
1) I waited for her in front of the movie theater, but she didn’t show up!
2) You need to hurry to get to the bank before it closes.
（解説）
1) " show up " = arrive = come up
