～ラジオ英会話1月のテーマと目的～
・関係代名詞 " who , which , that " と関係副詞 "where , when , why " といった節による修飾。
・修飾の本質が、空所にあることを理解する。

Lesson188：「関係代名詞 who・whom 目的語位置の空所に使おう」

A) So how do you like Miyajima Island?
B) It’s beautiful. I’d never seen a shrine gate in the sea before coming here.
A) It’s really rare, even in Japan.
B) Oh, you see the guy over there? That’s the man who I met on the bullet train to Hiroshima.
A) What a coincidence! Did you talk with him?
B) Yes, I did. He was in the seat behind me, and I asked him if I could put my seat back.
A) That was very polite of you.
B) Then he gave me a sweet snack! It was delicious.

A) それで、宮島は気に入りましたか？
B) 美しいわ。私はここに来るまで、海に建っている神社の門を見たことがなかったんです。
A) それは日本でも珍しいんですよ。
B) あら、あそこの男の人が見えるかしら？あの人は、私が広島に来る新幹線の中で出会った男性なの。
A) それは偶然ですね！彼とは話をしましたか？
B) ええ、話しました。彼は私の後ろの席に座っていて、私は座席を倒してもよいか尋ねたんです。
A) あなたはとても礼儀正しいんですね。
B) そのあとで、彼は私に甘いお菓子をくれました！とてもおいしかったです。

* " put my seat back" = 座席を後ろに倒す

- Real grammar for communication -
That’s the man who I met on the bullet train.
あの人は私が新幹線の中で出会った男性です。

＊目的語位置に空所がある場合、" who , whom"の両方を選べる。" whom" は、フォーマルな文体を除き、殆ど見られない。（特に口語）

- Grammar In Action -
1) 僕らがつい最近雇った男を僕は本当に気に入っているよ。
2) 私の両親は私がつきあっている男性が大嫌いなの。
3) 残念ながら彼らがマネジャーに選んだ人にその仕事は務まらない。

（答え）
1) I really like the guy who we just hired.
2) My parents can’t stand the guy I’m going out with!
3) Unfortunately, the person who they chose to be manager is not up to the job.
（解説）
1）hire = on the moment and the action of hiring. So, bam, you’re hired.
2）up to = 色々な意味がある。「あるレベルに達すること」が根底にある。
