～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson18「inのイメージ」

A) Elly, what are you doing?
B) I’m doing a little science experiment. Watch this. This is a peeled, hard-boiled egg. And here is a milk bottle. I put a lit match into the bottle. Now, I cover the top with my hand.
A) There’s smoke in the bottle.
B) Now I put the egg on top of the bottle.
A) Wow! It got sucked in!
B) Right. That’s because of the low pressure in the bottle. I’m really interested in physics.
A) I can see that.

＊" stand-up comedy " = 一人で行うお笑い
＊" Kids today " = 今どきの子供

- Check your grammar -
① It got sucked in!
　（卵が）吸い込まれた！
② That’s because of the low pressure in the bottle.
　それは瓶の中の低い圧力のせいよ。

＊①の文は受動型だが、" got " が使われている。" get " は「動き一般」に意味を広げている動詞。そのため「予期せず・突然」といった事態が急に動いたニュアンスを持つ。

- Build up your vocabulary -
I’m really interested in physics.
私は物理学にとても興味があります。

＊この " in " は「容器の中」というイメージ。この文では、私の興味が " physics " の中にあることを示している。

（例文）
・I live in Tokyo.
　私は東京に住んでいる。
・She is in a red jacket.
　彼女は赤いジャケットを着ている。
・You can do the test in pen or pencil.
　テストはペンでも鉛筆でもかまいませんよ。
・I’m so happy to finally see you in person.
　とうとう直接お目にかかることができ、とてもうれしく思います。
・I don’t know how to say that in English.
　英語でどう言っていいのかわかりません。

1) クリスがスーツを着ているのを見たことがある？
2) 最も大切なことは自分を信じることだよ。

（答え）
1) Have you ever seen Chris in a suit?
2) The most important thing is to believe in yourself.
（解説）
1) 帽子だと小さすぎて " in " は使えない。ジャッケトぐらい大きくて初めて「覆っている」という感じになる。
