ラジオ英会話　「He went to Vietnaim on business」2019年4月15日　Lesson11

～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson11：「onの広がり①」

A) I’m happy to be back in Texas, Luke.
B) It’s great to see you again, Keiko. It has been over a year, hasn’t it?
A) Yes. Your father’s restaurant hasn’t changed, and the Mexican food is still great. By the way, where is your father?
B) He went to Vietnam on business. He wants to open a restaurant in Hanoi.
A) Do Vietnamese people like Mexican food?
B) I heard they appreciate the spicy flavor.
A) I hope he is successful.

＊" appreciate " = 価値を認める = 好む
＊" I’ll take care of it " = 私に任せて

- Check your grammar -
① I’m happy to be back in Texas.
　テキサスに戻ってこられて、うれしいわ。
② He wants to open a restaurant in Hanoi.
　彼はハノイでレストランを開きたいと思っているんだよ。

＊①の " to" は happy の説明。位置で決まる。　②の " to " は目的語の位置にあるから目的語。

- Build up your vocabulary -
He went to Vietnaim on business.
彼は仕事でベトナムに出かけました。

＊テーブルを出来事がそのうえで起こる舞台のような物とみなすと、" business " という舞台の上で " He went to Vietnaim " という出来事が起こった、というイメージになる。" on duty, on holiday, on vacation " もこのイメージ。また、媒体・機器も舞台がイメージされる。前置詞のイメージは単純故に、幅広い意味がある。

　彼は病気休暇中です。
・I’m on duty now.
　今、勤務中です。
・I heard it on the radio.
　それはラジオで聞きました。
・I always write on a computer.
　僕はいつもパソコンで書きものをします。
・I live on the Yamanote Line.
　私は山手線沿線に住んでいます。

1) 私のお気に入りのバンドは現在ツアー中です。
2) 「ハッピーバースデー」をギターで弾く方法を知っている。

1) My favorite band is on tour at the moment.
2) I know how to play "Happy Birthday" on the guitar.
（解説）
1）" tour " means "going around several different places". So a band on tour would be going around the country or going around the world.
