Lesson223：「文型③　説明型」

A) How about going to see the peach blossoms in the park this weekend?
B) I’m sorry, I can’t. I’m going to my hometown to see my granny.
A) Oh, that’s nice.
B) My parents live with her, and Mom said my granny misses me a lot.
A) Why don’t you call her?
B) I wish I could. Actually, she can’t hear very well. She is going deaf.
A) That’s too bad. Anyway, it’s so sweet of you to go and see her. I hope you and your family have a great weekend.
B) Thank you. You too.

She is going deaf.
彼女は耳が遠くなってきている。

＊" going deaf " の部分は説明型。動詞の後ろに説明語句を置き、主語の説明を行う型。典型的なのは、be動詞。be動詞には特に意味はなく、イコール(＝) 程度のつなぎ言葉。「she = deaf」ということ。be動詞以外が使われると、「＝」関係の上に、動詞の意味が重なる。ここでは、" go " の「ある状態への移行」と進行形のニュアンスが含まれている。

　ロンドン旅行の計画を立てています。
・Dan is spoiled by his parents.
　ダンは両親に甘やかされている。
・My goal is to find a cure for cancer.
　私の目標はがんの治療法を見つけることです。
・The problem is that there’s no way I’m going to meet tomorrow’s deadline.
　問題は、明日の締め切りを守ることはどう考えてもできないということだ。

（解説）
2）"a point " = very weak, because it means one of many possible points. " the - " = really focuses on that one point. Therefore it highlights the importance of it. I’m consequently highlight the importance of what’s that point is.
