・関係代名詞 " who , which , that " と関係副詞 "where , when , why " といった節による修飾。
・修飾の本質が、空所にあることを理解する。

Lesson193：「That を使えば怖くない」

 A) OK, that ends our lecture today. Remember students to read chapter 10 of the textbook before the next lecture.
 B) Professor Peacock, may I ask you a question about the lecture?
 A) Of course, Misaki.
 B) Thank you. You said that human beings are unique because we use fire.
 A) Yes, that’s right. Humans are the only animals that use fire.
 B) Well, do you think that fire is necessary to have a civilization?
 A) That’s a very good question, Misaki. It depends on what you mean by “civilization.” But having control of fire was certainly a turning point in human evolution.

Humans are the only animals that use fire.
人類は火を使う唯一の動物です。

＊ " that " はwho, which に優先して使われるケースがある。先行詞が「唯一」であることを感じさせる " the only, the first, the last "を含む場合と最上級である場合。また " all, any, no, every " を伴う「全・無」を意味する場合。さて、" the only, everything "などの先行詞には、選択の余地はない。予め1つに決定しているから。よって、「選択」を意味に含む関係代名詞よりも、単に「導く」だけの " that " が好まれる。初心者のうちは、ややこしい制限のない that を使えばよい。

 人間の精神の中に見いだされる最も単純な感情は好奇心である。
・This is everything that I own.
 これが私の持っているすべてです。
