・「過去分詞形 , 節」をマスターする。
・節とは主語・動詞を備えた文の中で使われる小さな文である。複雑な内容を伝えるには不可欠な要素。節には、「that節」「if・whether節」「wh節」の3種類。

Lesson156：「文の中の小さな文：節③ if / whether 節」
（状況）クラークをリカが諭している

A) Rika, I don’t like cleaning the classroom every day. It’s so boring.
B) Whether you like it or not isn’t important. We have to do it. It’s part of being a student at this school.
A) In the U.S., students don’t have to clean the classroom. Professionals do it at night.
B) Well, that’s the American way, but we are in Japan. This is the Japanese way.
A) I see. Well, there is one good thing about the Japanese way.
B) What’s that?
A) Students will take better care of the classroom to keep it clean.
B) Exactly.

A) リカ、僕は毎日教室を掃除するなんて嫌だよ。とてもつまらないし。
B) あなたがしたいかどうかなんて問題じゃないのよ。私たちはそれをしなければならないんだから。それはこの学校の生徒であることの一部なんだから。
A) アメリカでは、生徒は教室を掃除しなくてもいいんだ。専門の業者が夜間にやってくれるからね。
B) でも、それはアメリカのやり方だけど、私たちは日本にいるのよ。これが日本のやり方なの。
A) 分かったよ。まあ、日本のやり方にはいい点が1つあるからね。
B) それって何？
A) 生徒は教室をきれいにしておくために、教室をもっと大事にするから。
B) そのとおり。

Whether you like it or not isn’t important.
あなたがそれを好きかどうかは問題ではない。

＊" if , whether " 節は、「～かどうか」というパッケージ。文中の場所により機能が与えられる。

（例文）

・He asked me if I wanted to go to the BBQ.
私がバーベキューに行きたいかどうかを尋ねた。
・The question is whether our business can survive or not。
問題は私たちのビジネスが生き残れるか否かだ。
・Whether you like it or not, you have to do your homework if you want to pass this class.
好むと好まざるとにかかわらず、このクラスで合格したければ宿題はやらなくてはならないよ。

＊" if " は「条件」、" whether " は「選択」のイメージ。whether だけ主語として使える。

- Grammar In Action -

1）私はベジタリアン用の料理があるかどうか給仕係に尋ねた

2）問題は今僕たちに家を買う余裕があるかどうかです。

（答え）

1）I asked the server if there were any vegetarian dishes.

2）The question is whether we can afford to buy a house right now.

（解説）

1）" waiter , waitress " は男性女性に限定する表現だから " server " を優先した。

2）「問題」はAかB。と「選択」を意識させるから " whether " が好ましい。

　" question " は、単なる疑問。" problem " には、お金があるかどうかといった障がいが感じられる。
