～ラジオ英会話11月のテーマと目的～
・「過去分詞形 , 節」をマスターする。
・過去分詞形も「to 不定詞 , 動詞ing 」のようにひとまとまりのパッケージと考える。しかし、過去分詞形は " 修飾語句 " しか機能がない。

（状況）アンドリューとジーナがサンフランシスコを比較してる

A) Gina, you’re from San Francisco, right?

B) I was born in a suburb of San Francisco, but I lived in the city center after I graduated from college.
A) It’s a big and exciting city, isn’t it?
B) Well, compared to Tokyo, San Francisco is a small city. I think Tokyo has more places to see.
A) Umm… Tokyo is a convenient city, but sometimes I get tired of the crowds. And the weather can be extreame at times.
B) San Francisco has a milder climate than Tokyo. But even in the summer it can get cold at night.

A) ジーナ君はサンフランシスコ出身だろう？
B) 私はサンフランシスコの郊外で生まれたけれど、大学を卒業したあとは市の中心部で暮らしていたわ。
A) そこって、大きくてエキサイティングな街だよね。
B) でも、東京に比べれば、サンフランシスコは小さな街よ。東京のほうが見どころ(観光スポット)は多いと思うわ。
A) 東京は便利な街だけど、人が多くてうんざりしてしまうとがあるよ。それに天気がときどき極端になることがあるし。
B) サンフランシスコの気候は東京よりも穏やかよ。でも、夏であっても夜には寒くなることがあるわ。

- Real grammar for communication -

・Compared to Tokyo, San Francisco is a small city.
　東京に比べれば、サンフランシスコは小さな街よ。

＊過去分詞は、名詞以外も修飾できる。ここでは、" Compared ~ " が、" San Francisco 以下の文 "を修飾している。本来、この二つの順序は逆で、" Compared ~ " が前置きされているのは、「指定」の意識から。

（例文）

・He was attacked by a dog.
彼は犬に襲われた。（受動態）
・Keep the door locked.
ドアには鍵をかけておくように。（目的語説明型）
・We arrived at the station exhausted.
私たちは疲れ切って駅に着いた。(動詞句説明）

1) 僕のアパートと比べると、君のところは宮殿のようだね！

2) 結婚式があるからスーツをきれいにしなくちゃ。

3) 僕たちはムカムカしながらホテルを出た。サービスが最悪だったんだ！

（答え）

1) Compared to my apartment, your place is like a palace!

2) I have to get my suit cleaned for the wedding.

3) We left the hotel disgusted. The service was atrocious!

（解説）

3）disgusted＝生理的に無理って感じ

　atrocious＝ really terrible
