～ラジオ英会話11月のテーマと目的～

・「過去分詞形 , 節」をマスターする。

・過去分詞形も「to 不定詞 , 動詞ing 」のようにひとまとまりのパッケージと考える。しかし、過去分詞形は " 修飾語句 " しか機能がない。

Lesson141：「過去分詞① 名詞の修飾」

（状況）セリアとジャックは泥棒について話している

 A) Have you heard the news?
 B) No, what news?
 A) Someone broke into Jason’s house last night.
 B) Oh, that’s scary. Is he all right？
 A) Yeah, he’s OK. Because he was away on a business trip.
 B) Well, did the thief steal anything?
 A) Yeah, but the things stolen were not so valuable.
 B) What were they?
 A) Three cups of yogurt that were in the refrigerator. Jason eats yogurt every morning.
 B) A yogurt thief ?  How weird!
 A) It really is.

 A) あのニュース、もう聞いた？
 B) いいや、どんなニュースだい？
 A) 昨日の夜、誰かがジェイソンの家に押し入ったのよ。
 B) わあ、それは怖いね。彼は無事なの？
 A) ええ、彼は無事よ。出張で留守だったから。
 B) それで、その泥棒は何か盗んだのかい？
 A) ええ、でも盗まれたものはあまり高価なものじゃなかったわ。何だったんだい? 
 B) 何だったんだい？
 A) 冷蔵庫に入っていたカップ入りヨーグルトが3つ。ジェイソンは毎朝ヨーグルトを食べるから。
 B) ヨーグルト泥棒かい？とっても奇妙だね！
 A) 本当にそうね。

- Real grammar for communication -

・The things stolen were not so valuable.

　盗まれたものはあまり高価なものじゃなかった

 過去分詞 " stolen " の位置は、名詞 " things " の後ろにある。

⇒ 過去分詞は、名詞の説明をしている。" the things " と言い切ってから、どんな モノなのかを " stolen " で説明している。

＊日本とは、説明順序が違う！（逆）

 （例文）

・These are the students chosen to go to the conference in Washington.
　この子たちがワシントンでの大会に選ばれた学生です。

 （過去分詞は名詞の前に置き指定することも可能）

・used car = 中古車  ・boiled egg ＝ゆで卵
・spoken / written English ＝英語の話し言葉・書き言葉
・fallen leaves ＝落ち葉　・retired professor ＝退職した教授

1) 赤で強調された部分を読まなければならないよ。

2) 絵を盗んだ嫌疑をかけられた3人は全員逮捕されています。

3) 気をつけて！床にはたくさん割れたガラスがあるよ。

（答え）

1) You should read the parts highlighted in red.
2) The three people suspected of stealing the painting have all been arrested.

3) Be careful! There’re a lot of broken glass on the floor.

（解説）

2）painting＝絵の具を使った絵,  picture は違う

　picture = 広い意味を持ち、写真やデッサンも表せる。

　Picasso’s picture = ピカソ自身の写真自身を意味してしまう
