Lesson169「offが持つ意味の広がり」
Dad）Roxy, it's 9 o'clock. Don't you have a part-time job today?
Roxy）I'm off this morning. I have to go to the dentist.
Dad）Oh, OK. By the way, I'm cooking dinner again tonight.
Roxy）Please don't make seafood paella again. Maybe I won't be able to eat it because of my tooth.
Dad）OK, let me think of another recipe with soft ingredients.
Roxy）Thanks, Dad. Anyway, let me sleep a bit more, OK?
Dad）Sure, but don't miss your appointment!

＊" off "  は「離れて」。比喩的な豊かさがある。
＊この文の off は 「（仕事から）離れて＝休み」
＊「（物理的に）離れる」「メニューにない」「体調が悪い」「腐っている」の意味もある

 （例文）

　もう寝ますね。
・Take off your jacket.
　上着を脱いでください。
・We're about five kilometers off the coast.
　海岸から約5キロのところにいます。
・Tom yam kung is off today, I'm afraid.
　申し訳ありませんがトムヤムクンは今日はやっていないんですよ。

　ちょっと体調が悪いんだ。食べたカレーのせいにちがいない。

　彼女が作ってくれたカレーは腐っていた。それってひどくない？

（解説）
 1) " get off " = (乗り物から）降りる

 2) " fall ill "  = 病気になる
 3) " show off " = クジャクの様に羽根を広げて、自分から注目してほしい感じ
