Lesson166「upが持つ意味の広がり」
Deena）Masaya, what are you doing reading those old magazines?
Masaya）What do you mean?
Deena）We have to clean the club room today. It's going to take us forever to clean it up.
Masaya）I know.
Deena）So why don't you begin by sweeping the floor?
Masaya）Let's have a game of shogi first.
Deena）What? We don't have time for that! You are the laziest person I know.
Masaya）Maybe, but I'm a great shogi player.

＊horrendous = ものすごい、凄まじい、ひどい

- Check your grammar -
① 疑問の意図を持たない「批判」
　What are you doing reading those old magazines?
　マサヤ、古い雑誌なんか読んでいて何をしているの？
② Why don't you ...? 「提案・助言」
　Why don't you begin by sweeping the floor?
　じゃあ、床の掃き掃除から始めてくれない？

＊" addition " = 新人

（例文）

- Build up your vocabulary -

It's going to take us forever to clean it up.
それをすっかり掃除することはいつまでたってもできません。

＊" up " は「上」という位置や方向を表す単語。比喩的な豊かさ → 多彩な表現。
＊コップの中に水が「上」までなみなみと注がれた様子　→　コップは「完全に」いっぱい　→　up には「完全性」のニュアンスが生まれる。
＊「増加」「沈んだ状態から元気な状態への移行」の意味もある

1) 食品の価格は毎日上がっているように見える。
2) さっさと終えよう。そうしたら一杯飲みに行けるから。
3) 出かける前にちょっとサッパリさせてくれないかな、いい？

1) Food prices seem to go up every day!
2) Let's finish up quickly. Then we can go for a drink.
3) Let me just freshen up before we go out, OK?

1) " plumber " = 配管工
