・ 形容詞をイメージでつかむ。

Lesson157「難易度を表す形容詞のとる形」
Sean）Oh, do we have to do this?
Ayu）What’s the problem? My father has been waiting to see you for ages, but you keep putting the meeting off.
Sean）Well, you told me your father is really hard to please. That’s why I’m so nervous.
Ayu）Where has your usual confidence gone? Look, I’ve already told him how wonderful you are. I’m sure you’ll get along very well with him.
Sean）OK. You’re right. Let’s do it.
Ayu）That’s the spirit.

＊bowing = お辞儀
＊over time = そのうちに

- Check your grammar -
① 現在完了進行形「今に迫る生き生き」
　My father has been waiting to see you for ages.
　父は長い間、あなたと会うのを待っています。
② 句動詞「put off」
　You keep putting the meeting off.
　あなたは会うのを延期し続けている。
③ got along with「相手とぶつかることなく歩いていく」
　I’m sure you’ll get along very well with him.
　きっと、あなたは父とうまくやっていけます。

君のお父さんはとても気難しい。

＊please の目的語位置にはあるべき要素がない、つまりここが空所。please your fatherという意味関係を結んでいる。
＊" 動詞 -ing 形 " は「感情を抱かせる原因」。
＊ " 過去分詞形 " は「感情」。 

 （例文）
・John is difficult to fool.
　ジョンは騙すのが難しい。
・Nancy is easy to talk to.
　ナンシーは話しやすい。
・I have no one to count on.
　僕には誰も頼りになる人がいない。

- Express yourself in English -
1) この店の価格をしのぐのは難しい。
2) どんあ目標も正しい態度を持っていれば到達不可能ではない。
3) 明日までに終わらせなくちゃならない課題が3つあるんだ。助けて！

（答え）
1) The prices at this shop are hard to beat.
2) No goal is impossible to reach with the right attitude.
3) I have three assignments to finish by tomorrow. HELP!
（解説）
 1) " be pleasantly surprised " = うれしい驚き

 2) " have trouble ～ing " = ～するのが難しい, " tell ... apart " = ～を見分ける
