Lesson68「保つ： keep」

A) What’s wrong? Why the angry face?
B) I’ve been sitting here in the car for 10 minutes already! You always keep me waiting.
A) We’re only going to the store for groceries. There’s no hurry.
B) Why should we waste time? The traffic is going to get heavy.
A) So what? You always say it’s boring staying home all the time.
B) Anyway, please get in the car.
A) OK, let’s go. As you say, if we leave now, we’ll beat the traffic.

＊" treat " = 普段はない、素晴らしい出来事
＊" can’t say " = 分からない

① I’ve been sitting here in the car for 10 minutes already!
　この車の中でもう10分間も座っているんだよ！

② Why should we waste time?
　なぜ時間をむだにする必要があるんだい？

　だから何？

君はいつも僕を待たせます。

＊ " keep " は「そのままの状態に保つ」イメージ。
＊自然にそうした状態にとどまるというよりも「そのままを保つ」積極的な行為であり、何らかの意図や努力がある。

（例文）
・Where do you keep your tools?
　どこに工具を置いてあるの？
・You need to keep warm, or you’ll catch a cold.
　温かくしておく必要がありますよ。さもないとかぜをひいてしまいます。
・My father keeps a dog.
　父は犬を飼っている。（have よりしっかり世話をしている感じ）
・Chris can’t keep a secret. / a promise.
　クリスは（秘密・約束）を守れない。
・Hey, what’s keeping you?
　ねえ、どうしてグズグズしているの？
