Lesson67「とどまる： stay, remain」

A) How was your trip to Spain?
B) It was very productive. Now we have enough information for this autumn’s travel brochure.
A) I hope so. Customers have become bored with the usual places in Spain.
B) We stayed in Barcelona for three nights. We spent a lot of time in the new downtown area.
A) Excellent. That’s the area we should focus on this time.
B) Exactly. There are a lot of new shops there. I’m looking forward to seeing the brochure.

＊" treat " = 普段はない、素晴らしい出来事
＊" can’t say " = 分からない

① Customers have become bored with the usual places in Spain.
　お客さんはスペインのお決まりの場所に飽きてしまったからね。

② I like cats, but I don’t like dogs.
　僕はネコは好きだけど、イヌは好きではありません。
③ That’s the area we should focus on this time.
　あそこが今回、注目すべきエリアだからね。

私たちはバルセロナに3泊しました。

＊ " stay " は「ある場所・状態に留まる」イメージ。
＊過去形は、過去を強調するため、省略できない。
＊" remain " は「ある場所・状態に留まる」というイメージ。stay よりフォーマルな感じ。

（例文）
・You can stay for dinner if you like.
　よかったら晩ごはんを食べていって。「晩ごはんを食べるために（しばらく）とどまる」
・The unemployment rate stayed below 3%.
　失業率は3％未満にとどまっている。
・Bill remained at home because he was ill.
　ビルは病気だったため家に残った。
・Everything remained the same.
　すべて変わることはなかった。
