Lesson52「さまざまな「到着」：arriveとreach」

A) Our wedding starts in two hours. Most of the guests have already arrived.
B) You look beautiful.
A) Thanks. I’m so nervous.
B) Don’t worry. We’ll be fine.
A) I hope so. OK, where are the wedding rings?
B) The rings? I thought you brought them.
A) What? Didn’t I tell you to put them in my bag?
B) Yes… I’m sorry, I forgot.
A) We can’t get married without the rings.
B) Maybe we can borrow some.
A) What?

＊" palm reading " = 手相占い
＊" move on " = 何かを予めやっていて次の段階に進む

① Our wedding starts in two hours.
　私たちの結婚式は2時間後に始まります。

＊①の " 揺るがぬ予定 " には現在形。

（例文）
・I leave for London in July.
　私は7月にロンドンに向けて出発します。
・I’m leaving for London in July.
　私は7月にロンドンに向けて出発する予定です。
・I’m going to leave for London in July.
　私は7月にロンドンに向けて出発するつもりです。

Most of the guests have already arrived.
ほとんどの招待客はもう到着しているわ。

＊ここの " arrive " は自動型で使われている。単なる動作。だから前置詞が必要になる。

＊" reach " は「手を伸ばして対象物に触れる」イメージがあるため、他動型で用いる。

（例文）
・We should reach the hotel by 6:30.
　ホテルに6時30分までに着くはずです
・Has the jury reached a verdict?
　陪審は評決に至りましたか？
・Where can I reach you?
　連絡先を教えてもらえますか？

1) 僕たちはとうとう目的地に着いた、疲れ果てて腹べこで。
2) 我々は合意に達することができなかった。

（答え）
1) We finally arrived at our destination, exhausted and famished.
2) We failed to reach an agreement.

（解説）
1) " famished" = really, really, really hungry
