ラジオ英会話 「He gave a talk about cats.」2019年4月8日 Lesson6

～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・ 今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson6：「aboutの意味の広がり」

 A) How are you feeling, Tamiko?
 B) Much better, thanks. I’m sorry I couldn’t come to school yesterday. I really wanted to hear Ken’s English presentation.
 A) Oh, right. It was really interesting and informative.
 B) What was the topic?
 A) He gave a talk about cats. He loves to take pictures of cats and post them on social media.
 B) Oh, I should check out his pictures.

 ＊" informative " = 情報が多くて有益な

① I’m sorry I couldn’t come to school yesterday.
　昨日は学校に来られなくて残念だったわ。
② He loves to take pictures of cats.
　彼はネコの写真を撮るのが大好きです。

＊①はリポート文。説明を後ろに置いている。②の " to以下 " は目的語として機能している。

彼はネコについての話をしたんだ。

＊" about " のイメージは雲のような「漠然とした～の周り」。" around, round " は円の様に「しっかりと周りを囲んでいる」イメージ。

 （例文）
・He is about 70 kilos.
　彼はだいたい70キロですよ。
・Quick! The train is about to leave.
　早く！電車が出そうだよ。
・There's somethig mysterious about him.
　彼は何かミステリアスな感じがする

1) 私のおじいさんは、私たちに過去の出来事についての話をするのが大好きだ。
2) ラッシュアワーに運転しているときには、キモチを引き締めなくてはならないよ。

（答え）
1) My granddad loves to tell us stories about the past.
2) You’d better keep your wits about you while driving during the rush hour.
（解説）
2）" wits " = 素早く考え決断する力
　 " had better " = 非常に緊迫した表現。「そうしないと悪い事が起こる」みたいな感じ。
