・動詞が分からなければ、どうしようもない。

Lesson54「こそこそ動詞：sneak, creep, stalk」

A) Masa, what happened to you at the karaoke place? You disappeared.
B) I couldn’t stand the boss’s singing in his off-key voice all night. I managed to sneak out.
A) I think it’s part of being in the company.
B) I know, but everyone has a limit.
A) Our boss loves singing karaoke with the staff. He’s planning another party next month.
B) Oh, really? Can you let me know the date? I’ll take that day off.

＊" off-key " = 調子はずれの
＊" move on " = 何かを予めやっていて次の段階に進む

- Check your grammar -
① Everyone has a limit.
　誰にだって我慢の限界というものがあるからね。

② Can you let me know the date?
　その日を教えてくれるかい。

- Build up your vocabulary -
I managed to sneak out.
何とかこっそり抜け出したんだ。

＊ " sneak " は「こっそり」「こそこそ」がイメージ。「見られないように・気づかれないように」動くことを示す。

＊ " cleep " は「忍び足」の動作が感じられる表現。誰にも見つからない様に、そろそろっと動く。

＊ " stalk " は気がつかれないように「そっと近づくつきまとう」。

　私は母が作ったブラウニーのひとつをこっそり台所から持ち出した。
・I hate it when you creep up on me.
　君がそうっと僕に近づいてくるのがイヤだ。

　ネコはその鳥に忍び寄った。

- Express yourself in English -
1) 内輪の（私的な）パーティーに忍び込んだんだけど、誰も僕に気がつかなかったよ。
2) 彼はそっと妹の背後から近づいて彼女をひどく怖がらせた！
3) ヨガ教室は10時30分に始まり12時に終わる。

（答え）
1) I sneaked into a private party, and nobody noticed me at all.
2) He crept up behind his little sister and frightened her to death!
3) The yoga class begins at 10:30 and finishes at 12.

（解説）
1) " but " でつなぐと「残念な感じ」が生まれてしまう
2) " to death " = 極端な強調
