Dialog4「Small Talk about Sports」
（状況）サムとパットは、持ち寄りパーティに行った

 A) やあ、サム。どう調子は？
 B) あら、パット。食べ物おいしそうね！何を持ってきたの？
 A) 僕は料理しないんだよね。飲み物を持ってきたよ。
 B) そうね、私もよ。
 A) 今夜、アローズはファルコンズを破れると思うかい？
 B) さあどうなるかしら。ファルコンズはがむしゃらにプレーするからね。
 A) 僕はアローズが厳しい状況を乗り越えて勝つと思うな。
 B) そうかも。何はともあれ接戦になるわね。

 A) Hey, Sam. What’s up?
 B) Hey, Pat. The food looks good! What did you bring?
 A) I don’t cook, man. I brought drinks.
 B) Yeah, me, too.
 A) Do you think the Arrows can beat the Falcons tonight?
 B) We’ll see. The Falcons play hard.
 A) I think the Arrows will rise to the challenge and win.
 B) Maybe so. At any rate, it’ll be a close game.

- Words &Expressions -

・small talk 　おしゃべり、雑談
・Hey　やあ。あら。(親しみを込めた挨拶）
・What’s up？　どう調子は？ (相手が答えない場合も多い）
・I don’t cook, man.　 僕は料理しないんだよね。(manはカジュアルな呼びかけ。通常男性へ使われるが、時に女性へも使われる)
・We’ll see. 　さぁどうなるか様子を見ないと。
・play hard 　がむしゃらに全力でプレーする
・rise to the challenge 　厳しい状況を乗り越える
・Maybe so. 　そうかもしれない。
・at any rate 　何はともあれ、いずれにせよ
・close game 　接戦、競り合い

At any rate, it’ll be a close game.
 何はともあれ、接戦になりますよ。

＊予測の表現。" at any rate " =「とにかく」" close game " =「差のつきにくい試合」。また、「 close battle , close race」とも言う。

A) Do you think Iwayama can beat Sunayama?
B) Well, Sunayama fights hard.
A) You said it.
B) At any rate, it’ll be a close battle.

パットはアローズがファルコンズを破れると思っています。サムはファルコンズは全力でプレーするので接戦になると思っています。

 Pat thinks the Arrows can beat the Falcons. The Falcons play hard so Sam thinks it’ll be a close game.

- In Another Situation -

Sam brought some food.サムは食べ物を持参した。

Hey, Sam. What’s up?
Hey, Pat. The food looks good! What did you bring?
I don’t cook, man. I brought drinks.
I brought that salad and this  lasagna.
They look great. Say, do you think the Arrows can beat the Falcons tonight?
Well, I’m a pretty new here in Arrow town. I hear the Falcons play hard.
I think the Arrows will rise to the challenge and win. At any rate, it’ll be a close game.
