Emily）Sam, what were you doing today? I sent you ten text messages. You didn't reply to any of them.
Sam）I'm sorry, Emily. I was snowed under with work all day.
Emily）But you always check your messages during your breaks. Why didn't you today?
Sam）Emily, calm down. I'm surprised that you should feel so upset.
Emily）You said I was the only girl you've ever loved. But you don't act like it.
Sam）I can explain everything.
Emily）OK, I'm listening.

＊was snowed under with work = 雪崩の様な仕事に埋もれている感じ
＊I'm listening = 静かな圧力がある

＊この " should " は「感情・判断を表す語句とともに使われる should」。
＊" should " のイメージは「進むべき道」→ 進むプロセスの意識 → 「感情，丁寧」。
＊should を使わず単に現在形を用いた場合、「今腹を立てている」状況に驚いているだけ。
