Lesson189「canの可能性・mayの可能性」

Alana）Happy New Year, Hiroki. It’s good to see you again.
Hiroki）Happy New Year to you, Alana. Yes, it has been a while.
Alana）What have you been up to recently?
Hiroki）Well, we had a New Year’s party, and the boss paid for everything!
Alana）Lucky you! We also had a company party, and the boss wouldn’t stop singing. He can be wild at times.
Hiroki）Sounds like it. But it’s good to get rid of stress, right?
Alana）Right.

① 現在完了形「迫ってくる感触」
　It has been a while.
　久しぶりだね。

　The boss wouldn’t stop singing.
　上司は歌うのをやめようとしませんでした。

＊" can " のイメージは「潜在」。ある人の中に「潜在する力」から「能力（～できる）」の意味。ある人が潜在的に持っている自由度に焦点を当てると「許可（～できますよ）」の意味。
＊ボスが「手に負えない」性質を持っていることを見抜いている。
＊" may " のイメージは「開かれたドア」。権威のある者がドアを開くとこから「許可」もある。「～かもしれない」＝その可能性は閉じられていない。" can " とは違い「分からない」感じからきている。

 （例文）
・Tokyo can be hot in October.
　東京は10月に暑くなることがある。
・My little sister can be extremely annoying.
　僕の妹には本当にイライラさせられることがあるよ。
・My new boss may be wild.
　私の新しいボスは手に負えないかもしれないなぁ。

3) You may need to bring a warm sweater because it can get chilly here at night.

 1) " it ~ ing " = to より生き生きしている
 3) " chilly " = 肌寒い
