ラジオ英会話　「There’s no point crying over spilt milk」2019年4月10日　Lesson8

～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson8：「over, about, on の「～について」」

A) Tony, what happened to your shirt?
B) Well, I had just bought a coffee when this guy bumped into me, and coffee spilled all over it.
A) Oh, no! Don’t you have an important meeting later this morning?
B) Yes, and I don’t have a spare shirt. What am I going to do?
A) Look, there’s no point crying over spilt milk. There’s a clothes shop nearby, so I’ll run over there and get you a new shirt. Problem solved!
B) Wonderful. What would I do without you?

＊" That’s the spirit. " = その意気だよ

- Check your grammar -
① I had just bought a coffee when this guy bumped into me.
　僕がちょうどコーヒーを買ったところに、男がぶつかってきたんだ。
② What would I do without you?
　君がいなかったら、僕はどうするだろう。

＊①の " this guy " は、回想にも関わらず、その場を思い返すように表している。" had just bought " で具体的に示唆。②の " without " は反事実だから、" will " は使えない。

- Build up your vocabulary -
There’s no point crying over spilt milk.
終わったことについて嘆いてもしかたがない。

＊" There is no point (in) – ing " は「〜しても何にもならない」を意味する。" over " の「上にアーチ」の感じから「（すでに過ぎ去り、乗り越えたこと）について」といったニュアンスになる。" over " は。 " about " を使うと「ざっくばらんに」話している感じになる。 " on " は「接触」のイメージがあり、「ピンポイントの話」をしたことから「専門的な」印象がある。だから、論文に " about " は使えない。
