Lesson214：「天候・距離・時間の it」

 A) Barry, let’s stop for a second. I think we’re lost.
 B) OK, let me check. It’s good that smartphones come with a GPS, right? Without them, we’d easily get lost. Yeah, we’re lucky. So, which way is the station?
 A) That way. It’s five kilometers from here to the station. We should walk fast because it looks like it’s going to rain.
 B) OK. I hope they have a restaurant near the station because I’m getting hungry.
 A) Yeah, me too. I’m in the mood for a big bowl of curry and rice.
 B) You always eat that on these hiking trips.
 A) Well, after all this exercise, my body craves spices.

＊" in the mood for " = ～したい気分

It’s five kilometers from here to the station.
ここから駅までは5キロあります。

＊「天候・距離・時間の it」は、特別視されてきた有名な使い方。特に指しているわけではない。ただ、it の意味が「受ける」だけ。

（例文）
・It’s a fine day.　 いい天気だね。
・It’s 11 o’clock now. 　今11時だよ
・It’s dark here. 　ここは暗いね。
・Who is it? 　どなたですか？
・Who are you?　（面識のない人に使う）

1) 今日はちょっと蒸し暑くない？
2) ああ、もう深夜零時だ。
（答え）
1) It’s a bit muggy today, isn’t it?
2) Gosh! It’s midnight already.
（解説）
1）muggy = hot and humid.
2）" Gosh " は " God " の婉曲表現。驚きや失望を表している。
some people will take offense to the use of religious word like "God". So instead of God, they will use the word that sounds like it, like beginning with "g-o", so we’ve got Gosh, and you can also say, Goodness.You can also say, "Oh, my goodness." Or just say "Oh, my", right?
