Dialog2「No Promotion」

A) Victoria got promoted to sous chef!
B) That’s what I hear.
A) It’s not fair. I feel like quitting!
B) Don’t do that, Ellen.
A) Could you talk to Chef Rex for me?
B) Chef Rex calls the shots in the kitchen.
A) But I’m much more qualified than Victoria.
B) Just the same, you’ve got to play by the rules.
A) Whatever!

- Words & Expressions -
・promotion 　昇格、昇進
・get promoted to = get a promotion to 　〜に昇格・昇進する
・sous chef 　副料理長「スーシェフ」
・That’s what I hear. 　そう聞いています
・It’s not fair. 　不公平です。
・feel like -ing　〜したい気分・気持ちである
・call the shots 　決定権を持つ、采配を振る
・target practice 　射撃練習
・be qualified 　資格がある
・just the same 　それはそうかもしれないが、何はともあれ
・play by the rules　ルール通りにやる
・whatever! 　どうしようもない！ああ、もう！（Whatを高く言う）

- Apply It -
You’ve got to play by the rules.
ルール通りにやらなければ。
＊助言の表現。" play by the rules " はスポーツに由来する言い回しで、「ルールに従って行動する」という意味。

A) Would Mr. Imyme fit in as a member of our team?
B) Well, he doesn’t play by the rules.
A) He doesn’t?
B) No. He plays by his own rules.

- Say It -
Could you talk to Chef Rex for me.

＊機能語を弱めて、上手く省エネする。「"Could you " → "クジュ"」, 「"talk to" → " トォクトゥ"」「"for me" → "フォミィ"」の様に弱める。内容語の「talk, Chef, Rex」は強める。

- Write It -
エレンはヴィクトリアが副料理長に昇格したことを知ります。彼女はレストランの経営者に不満を伝えますが、彼にキッチンでの決定権はありません。彼は彼女にルールに従って行動するようにと助言します。

Ellen finds out (that) Victoria got promoted to sous chef. She complains to the restaurant manager but he doesn’t call the shots in the kitchen. He advises her to play by the rules
