Dialog2 「Jack Comes Home」

（状況）夫のジャックが仕事から帰ってきた。

A) 何かいい匂いがするぞ！夕食は何だい？
B) ミートローフとマッシュポテトよ。
A) いいねえ！サムはどこかな？
B) ベッドで休んでいるの。気分がよくないって言っていたわ。喉が痛いの。
A) それは大変だ。ハクション！
B) お大事に！風邪を引きませんように
A) 僕は決して病気にはならない！ハクション！
B) 食事が冷める前にいただきましょう。
A) そうだね。ハークション！

A) Something smells good! What’s for supper?
B) Meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
A) Great! Where’s Sam?
B) He’s in bed resting. He said he didn’t feel well. He has a sore throat.
A) That’s too bad. Achoo!
B) Bless you I hope you’re not catching a cold.
A) I never get sick! Achoo!
B) Let’s eat before the food gets cold.
A) Okay. Aaachoo!

- Words &Expressions -

・Something smells good! 　何かいい匂いがしますね！
・What’s for – ? 　〜は何ですか？
・be in bed resting 　ベッドで休んでいる
・have a sore throat　喉が痛む
・That’s too bad. 　それはよくない。それは大変。
・Achoo! ハクション！ (大くしゃみはAaachool）
・Bless you! 　お大事に！（Achoo！に対する決まり文句）
・before the food gets cold 　食べ物が冷めないうちに

- Apply It -

He’s in bed resting.
彼はベッドで休んでいます。

＊状況を伝える表現。" be in bed " と場所を特定し、それに " resting " を加えた形。

（応用練習）

A) Where’s Ken?
B) He’s in bed resting.
A) Is he sick?
B) He has a sore throat.
A) Uh-oh. you know that means.

- Say It -

I never get sick!

＊「私に限っては」という感じで、" I " を強める。

- Write It -

サムはベッドで休んでいます。するとジャックがくしゃみをし始めます。ベッツィーは彼が風邪を引き始めていないことを願います。

Sam is in bed resting. Then Jack starts sneezing. Betsy hopes he’s not catching a cold.
Sam is in bed resting. Now J Jack begins sneezing. Betsy hopes he’s not catching a cold.

（補説）

＊ Then より Now の方がドラマチック。

＊Betty hopes he’s not catching a cold だと現時点で、少し風を引いている可能性を示唆する。

- In Another Situation -
It’s many, many years later ずっと何年もあとである。

Something smells good! What’s for supper?
One second chicken curry and this salad from the pod.
Great! Where’s Sam?
He’s in bed resting. He said he didn’t sleep well last night. He had to work with his robot secretary for the big presentation.
That’s too bad. I hope it went well.
He said it was a success.
Great! Achoo! I think it’s a flue.
Bless you! Do you need a flue shot ?
Yes. I feel a hundred percent.
Oh, good. Let’s eat.
