Interviewer）Freddy, your team didn't win this time, but all the players fought hard.
Captain）Yes, that's true. I'm proud of them.
Interviewer） Are you disappointed?
Captain）Not at all. We'll come back next time. We don't always win, but we never lose.
Interviewer）What do you mean by that?
Captain）I mean that even if we don't win, we never lose heart.
Interviewer）Wow, that's a great attitude.
Captain）Thank you. That's why we are the champions, my friend..

＊my best days are behind me = 最良の時期は過ぎた
＊lose heart = 心がくじける、がっかりする

＊相手の「真意」を尋ねる定型文。
＊ " by " = 方法。
＊ " what do you mean " = 深いことは聞いてない。
＊ " How do you mean? " = どういった思考プロセスによりそうなったのか。

・How do you mean?
　それはどういう意味ですか。

　A）I'll never get the hang of snowboarding.
　　スノーボードには絶対慣れないよ。
　B）Why do you say that?
　　何でそんなこと言うの？
　A）I just keep losing my balance and falling!
　　いつもバランスを崩して倒れるんだもの。

1) それはどういう意味ですか？　あなたが何を言いたいのかよくわからないのですが。
2) それはどういう意味ですか？　ちょっと詳しく言っていただけますか？
3) どうしてそう仰るのですか？　あまりすっきり理解出来ません、申し訳ありませんが。

1) What do you mean by that? I can't quite grasp what you want to say.
2) How do you mean? Could you elaborate a little?
3) Why do you say that? It's not very clear to me, I'm afraid.
