ラジオ英会話　「There’s a great bookshop by my school」2019年4月18日　Lesson14

～ラジオ英会話4月のテーマと目的～
・今年度のテーマは、単語・英語表現のイメージ。日本語訳ではなく、イメージで単語を操作することで、英会話は飛躍する。

Lesson14：「byのイメージ」

A) What are you reading on your tablet?
B) I’m looking for a book, but I can’t find it on the internet.
A) What kind of book is it?
B) It’s a collection of letters written by the classical music composers Brahms and Clara Schumann. They wrote hundreds of letters to each other.
A) Well, if you still can’t find it, there’s a great bookshop by my school. They might be able to help you.
B) OK. I’ll check it out on the weekend.

＊" cram school " = 学習塾
＊" Kids today " = 今どきの子供

- Check your grammar -
① What are you reading on your tablet?
　タブレットで何を読んでいらっしゃるの？
② What kind of book is it?
　どんな本ですか？
③ They might be able to help you.
そこならあなたの助けになれるかもしれないわ。

＊①の " wh疑問文 " は「空白（reading の後ろ）」が重要。空所は質問のターゲット。　③の " might " は「控えめな」ニュアンスを持つ。

- Build up your vocabulary -
There’s a great bookshop by my school.
私の学校の近くにすばらしい書店がありますよ。

＊この " by " は「近く、そば」のイメージ。受動態の「～によって」も近くのイメージから成る。「stand by = 近くに立つ → 味方になる」,「drop by = 近くにポテッと落ちる → 立ち寄る」,「by oneself = 自分自身のそば → ポツンとしたイメージ → ひとりで」,「by the way = 近くの道にそれる → ところで」「little by little, day by day = 近く → 連続性」。

（例文）
・John was attacked by a dog.
　ジョンはイヌに襲われた。
・My English is improving little by little.
　私の英語は少しずつ伸びています。
・It’s getting warmer day by day.
　日に日に暖かくなってきている。

- Express yourself in English -
1) 私たちの劇団は、元の3つの会社がスポンサーになっている。
2) そのレシピどおりステップ・バイ・ステップで作れば、うまくいくはずだよ。

1) Our drama group is sponsored by three local companies.
2) Follow the recipe step by step, and it should turn out fine..
